DAVID HEPHER

DAVID HEPHER

David Hepher is a painter, best known for his paintings of buildings/tower blocks; his most recognisable; the Aylesury Estate. His work lies between conceptual and traditional and has been exhibited in many places. Some of which include: Serpentine Gallery, Flowers Gallery, Mappin Art Gallery, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Hayward Gallery, Ikon Gallery, and Tate Britain.

His work gives off very grungy, city vibes emphasised by the city blocks repetitive simple structure and onlooking graffiti which adds the only pop of colour to the paintings.

I quite like David’s work as it shows a bleak realism on the way a city looks compared to how people picture it to be. His paintings show all the nitty gritty details of the landscape without exaggerating anything. Just purely how the buildings look. The only thing which may be emphasised is the graffiti, in most pictures its where graffiti is actually seen on these buildings, however, some paintings the grafitti is almost like a top layer to the painting. I like how the graffiti adds a pop of colour to the bleak background whilst still keeping the atmosphere of the painting bleak.
